"What sets a canoeing expedition apart is that it purifies you more rapidly and inescapably than any other. Travel a thousand miles by train and you are a brute; pedal five hundred on a bicycle and you remain basically a bourgeois; paddle a hundred in canoe and you are already a child of nature.â€
Pierre Elliott Trudeau - Exhaustion and Fulfillment: The Ascetic in a Canoe -1944, aged 25yrs

"We are a nation of canoeists, and have been since the earliest days, paddling our way up the St. Lawrence, across the lakes, over the portages of the shield, west along the North Saskatchewan through the Yellowhead gap and thence southwest by the Columbia and Fraser rivers to the sea. When someone asks you how Canada could exist as a horizontal country with its plains and mountains running vertically, tell him about the paddlers."
Pierre Berton
- Why We Act Like Canadians - 1982

“A Canadian is somebody who knows how to make love in a canoe.â€
Pierre Berton - 1973
